JROTC History
The School Student Body Association of the school year 1997/1998 chose and adopted the Dolphin, a magnificent mammal known for its grace, strength, and courage as their mascot to protect and encourage the students through their high school's endeavors. Although the elegance and grandeur of a "Dolphin", SHS JROTC Program was compelled to search for another adopted name because "Dolphin" was already adopted by one of the CNMI JROTC Program. In view of the unique historical achievements and memoirs of Inarajan and Oceanview JROTC Programs, the GMSU, DAI, instructors, and cadet leaders have decided to maintain either school's colors and adopted name. The SAI, 1SG Salas, have decided to exercise one of the oldest adage of the American democratic system, by putting it to a vote. In order to accomplish this objectively and fairly , the SAI entrusted the Freshman's only to do the voting. One hundred and thirty-three (133) Freshman voted on 7 October 1997 and the "Knight" won by six (6) votes. As a result, on the 8th of October, 1SG Salas declared the Southern High School JROTC Program as the "Knight" Battalion and with black and gold for its' organizational colors. The SAI immediately informed the GMSU DAI, Major (retired) Paul U. Luarca, of the lasting declaration and requested for his approval of the decsion.
The battlion experienced its first 4th Region Formal Inspection (RFI) on February 1998 and was granted the Honor Unit with Distinction Award. In SY 2000/2001, the "Knight" Battalion underwent its second RFI and again, the battalio was given the Honor Unit with Distinction Award. Between RFI's, a Validation Visits were conducted by UOG Senior ROTC and the Battalion rated high on each visits, allowing the unit to maintain its HUD status.
On 19 thru 23 December 2001, the "Knight" Battalion hosted the Guam Multiple School Unit Winter Encampment at Serena Beach, Anderson Air Force Base. The following school year, 15 March 2002,the battalion hosted the 12th Annual GMSU Military Ball, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. As of the school year of 2017/2018, Southern High School Knight Battalion hosted both the Annual GMSU Encampment at Gab Gab Beach, Naval Base and the Annual GMSU Military Ball, which was held at Leo Palace Resort Hotel.
The opening enrollment for school year 1997/98 was 264 cadets, which shows promising future for the newly formed "Knight" JROTC Battalion. From 1999/2000 to present, the school population have slightly decreased and so the battalion's enrollment. However, since then, the opening enrollment has been steadily over 170 cadets annually.
